When the dust settled in Kigutu, 160 villagers, tired from a hard day’s work, had accomplished much: In less than four days, the village cleared a 4-mile road entirely by hand. It was precisely this level of energy and engagement that Deo, the founder of Village Health Works, and his American friends, with their resources and networks, felt compelled to meet.
Since those early days, the community has given of their time and energy to see through the construction of five new buildings in Kigutu, the installation of solar electricity, and the building of a 13,000-gallon potable water tank that supplies water for the clinic and the surrounding communities. Thanks to generous donations, the clinic has been able to purchase a satellite, ambulance, staff transport vehicle, and medical supplies. Burundian staff members have been able to travel to Rwanda to be trained at Partners in Health’s project there, and have returned to share their knowledge with our community health workers. Since our inception less than three years ago, we’ve treated 30,000 patients, including refugees who walked to our clinic from as far away as Tanzania and Congo.
But the work has just begun and our needs are still great.
The generosity of donors will guarantee that these needs will be met. We promise to make every penny we receive count.
